Please go to the Printables page to download these forms.

Again, if you found any of these printables helpful, please leave a comment!

I also thought I would give a little info on how I test some of the other items that do not have corresponding assessment forms.

Counting with 1:1 Correspondence: I observe students while they count counters that I have placed out on the table.  Do they touch each object, giving it a number as they count?

Uses Positional Words: I used a small block and a bowl.  I then asked to students to put the block 'inside' the bowl, 'between' the bowl and my hand (I would place my hand on the table), hold the block over the bowl... and so on.

Sorting: I use attribute buttons to assess sorting.  You could also use the family bear counters (the counters with 3 sizes of bears in different colors), accompanied with pattern blocks (for sorting by shape).  I simply ask students "Put these into piles by color."

Patterning: Pattern blocks are a great tool to access patterning.  I use the same attribute buttons from sorting.  I first start a pattern and ask them to finish it.  You could also use a patterning worksheet to assess this skill.

Scissor Skills: I use scissor skills practice sheets.  Session 1 we do straight lines, session 2 curved lines and session 3 zig zag lines.  As far as the recording sheet goes... mark correct if finger and hand positioning are correct.  Mark finger, if not grasping scissors correctly with fingers.  Mark hand if hold scissors upside down (thumb is not up).
* I save these cutting samples and put in each student's file*

Orders Object by Size: Give students any 3 objects that can be lined up by size.  Specify if you would like them lined up from small to large or big to little.  The family counting bears are good to access this.

Seq. events in order: Use premade sequencing games or find a practice page that sequences with 3 scenes.

Sequence numbers 1-10: Use the number recognition form found on the printables page.  Have student cut apart numbers and glue in order onto a sentence strip.
*Save and put in each student's file*

Shows knowledge of Rhyming: Give students an example of a rhyming word pair, "Cat and hat rhyme.  Can you think of something else that rhymes with cat?  Can you think of a word that rhymes with 'done'?

I hope you find this information useful and that it makes your life a little bit easier!

Preschool Assessments

Within my preschool classroom, I have been completing assessments with each student during Center Time.  This is something I was very used to doing when I previously taught first grade.  For my preschool students I have 3 testing periods: September, January and May.  I am finishing up the session 2 testing period and I am amazed at the progress that has been made.

I use a reporting sheet for each child.  This works out quite well.  It is all documented on one page for easy viewing and comparison.  If there is a skill I do not want to test during a certain testing session, then I simply put an X through it.  I have included a link to this recording sheet.  It was originally created in Microsoft Word.  I am offering it PDF format and hope that you find it useful!

I also report these results to parents to let them know how his/her child is doing.  I do this as a mini report card.  I have included a link to these mini report cards, along with the parent letters I attach to the report.  I make sure that parents understand that the assessments that were done are just one source of information and that children don't always show us what they know!
Please read the parent letter for more info.

FYI: On the download, the session 1 report card is first, then the parent letter.  Next, is the session 2 report card and parent letter.  Last, is the third session report card and parent letter.  NOTE: I send home both session 1 and session 2 report cards for session 2.  I retest and report any skills that the child may not have mastered in the previous session.  When sending home session 3 report cards, I also send home session 1 and 2 updated as well.

The preschool class I teach is mainly composed of students going to Kindergarten next year.  Please keep this in mind when viewing this progress report.  I truly believe children progress in learning at thier own pace.  These assessments are to help identify what areas of learning might need more exposure/practice.

So, now you may be wondering...what kinds of assessment materials do you use?

Look for that post coming soon!

If you downloaded these assessment materials and found them useful, please leave a comment!

How does your child learn?

When observing my almost 3 year old during free play and structured learning, I am amazed at how I can already see her learning styles in action!

I am referring to the 3 basic learning channels (there are also Multiple Intelligences and more in-depth learning styles).

Visual: learning by seeing

Auditory: learning by hearing

Kinesthetic: learning by doing

I think it is very important to provide structured and open ended activities in all of the learning styles for young learners.  But, I was suprised when I already saw my daughter focusing on a certain learning style.

For example, she can recognize numerals up to 10.  She uses her visual learning skills to see these numerals and auditory learning to hear the number we tell her it is.  But, she has a difficult time counting to 10 orally (with no numerals in front of her).  This tells me that she prefers to learn with her sense of sight, rather than hearing or doing.  I have seen this same thing happen with uppercase letter recognition.

I am very interested in seeing if her preferred learning style changes as she grows.
Even with this knowledge, I know that as a parent it is my job to provide opportunties using all of her senses.  But, I think it is amazing to observe and learn about how our children are so unique!

Vinyl fun!

So, I have owned my Cricut for  a little over a year now and I had never tried cutting vinyl.  I am amazed how easy it was.  I bought my vinyl off E-bay.  The web seems to have so many more color options compared to the craft store AND they are cheaper!

Here is my first project.  It is for our new baby boy's nursery.  He is due in a couple months!

That same weekend I created this for our front door.  These project are nothing special, but I like how they turned out!

I would love to see anything you have created with Cricut and vinyl!  Please share!
